If you have ever had a music lesson in school, you will know how pivotal music theory is. It is what brings all the instruments and all the genres together. Many people search for music theory classes online and find them to be wholly insufficient. They don’t capture their imagination, nor do they properly explain how important music theory actually is. That is unless they are delivered by registered and accredited colleges.
The Importance of Music Theory
It can be difficult to understand why music theory is so important. For many people, being able to play music is a natural born talent and something that therefore comes without thinking. But, in reality, if you really want to be good at what you do, you have to understand what it is that you are doing. If the sound of music is its language, then music theory is its grammar. You can never truly understand a language and get it completely right unless you know its grammar. Without it, you may have a flair for language but you will make mistakes and you won’t learn from them because you don’t know you’re making them. That is exactly the same with music.
Most people who play at least a little bit of music know that it is made up of notes written on tablature, known as musical notation. They also know, particularly if they play piano or guitar, that there are chords. They often don’t know how to read musical notations, nor do they know which notes are included in chords and why those work together so well. The problem with not understand those two things, is that you will also not understand how different chords relate to each other and how, when put together, they make a sound. Essentially, you will just be playing random things that happen to sound good.
Imagine that you have heard a song in a foreign language that you really love. Take, for instance, Time to Say Goodbye, which is sang half in Italian and half in English. You may have listened to it over and over again, and you know all the words to it, even the ones in Italian. In fact, you are 100% sure that you have the right words, because you have looked them up online. Unfortunately, for all of that, you probably still aren’t saying things right, because you don’t know what you’re saying (no, the Italian words are not simply a translation of the English ones). And if you were to sing those words to an Italian, they would probably look at you very strangely, no matter how close to the real thing you think you are.
That is exactly what music theory is: a language and one that you have to learn to understand in full. Not just the words, but the sentence construction and the grammar as well. And yes, you can learn this online, but make sure that the source is good so that you actually learn the right things.
