If you are someone with a creative mind who is looking for a new hobby, look no further than designing your very own furniture. There are so many benefits to taking on such a hobby, personally you will be able to test your skills and your creativity as you seek to design beautiful pieces of furniture, and practically, you can fill up your home with unique pieces that you can be proud of having made them with your own hands. I spoke to a good friend of mine Marc Hagins who has been designing furniture for many years now, as to how one could get started with this new hobby. If you are up for it, here’s how to get started with furniture design.
The first step will be to decide on a simple piece of furniture to start with, perhaps a stool or a table. Once you know which piece you will make first, you should use a professionally made item and take it to pieces, paying close attention to what goes where. Once you have deconstructed the professional piece of furniture, you should then put it back together again, try this with a few pieces until you have an understanding of how it works.
There are many how-to guides online and on sites such as YouTube which can really help to take you through the process step-by-step. Spend some time following these guides and videos until you begin to gain an idea about what is required from you when making your own furniture.
Designing and Buying
Once the time has come to complete your own furniture design, you need to use a pen, a piece of paper and some measuring equipment so that you can design your first piece. Measurements need to be precise as when you go to the hardware store to pick up your materials, you will need them to be cut to the right size.
Throughout the process of creating your first piece, make sure that you take down many notes, remember that this is a learning process and you will make mistakes. As long as you document your mistakes, you can learn from them for next time.
Make The Same Piece
If you decide to make a stool or a chair, make sure that you do so a good number of times so that you can really master it. Understand what joints are required, how to add design tweaks and what materials work best, before you move on to something else. Many of the skills are the same regardless of what furniture you are making but it is still important that you try to master one piece before you try out any others.
The key to becoming good at designing furniture is to practice, practice and practice some more, the emphasis should be placed on the structure itself, any fancy design or stylish additions can be made at the end. The idea is to create solid pieces that function, only after you have achieved this can you add the flair.
