If you run a social media marketing agency it is very likely that you will spend a lot of time on your mobile phone and will be the oracle to all of your friends and colleagues who want to know how everything works. One of, if not the hardest issues for a social media marketeer is how to keep up with all of the changes whilst still doing your job and having some downtime at some part of the day.
There are many tips and ways to help with this onerous task. It will come as no surprise that one of the best places to find out about social media, is on a social media sites and one of the best sites for this is twitter. Creating a streak on twitter using popular hashtags is one such way to do this by using tags such as #socialmedia or #inboundmarketing, if you use a generic or popular term like #marketing you will be inundated with tweets on your stream and it will be more difficult for you to locate the ones that are relevant to you. You can also save searches directly onto your Twitter account. Search for the term that you are looking for by entering it into the search bar in the top right-hand corner. Then when you see the results page tap on the gear icon and select the save this search option. The next time you go back to the Twitter search bar you will see that it is there for you to click on and peruse.
Another great tip is this, when a new announcement is made on twitter you will see the major players discussing it. Keep a note of the names of those who look to be the most proficient in the industry, the key players. You can then follow these users and see what they have to say, you could even make contact with these users, if you have any questions. If they are quite vocal online, then they are probably the kind of people that like to be asked questions and share their knowledge.
If you are a member of HubSpot then you can create a stream using HubSpot Social Inbox. You need to type your hashtag into the search box at the top of the screen and then when you check your results you will be given a list of people whose tweets match the ones you have searched for.
The other big key player is of course Google, who accounts for two thirds of internet searches made. You can use your list of hashtags and influencers to follow these people on social media and you can set up a Google Alert for some of them also. This will ensure that you get regular updates of their postings about social media. All you do is type in your search term, select the frequency of when you want to be informed and that is it, done! You can set your alerts on a daily basis at a convenient time so that you are not tempted to break away from what you are doing to look at them.
